How To Care For Your New Dental Implants
Depending on the extent of your issues, the path to obtaining your dental implants can be a long one. After investing time and money in the procedure, you’ll want to do everything you can to ensure that it is successful. This means following your periodontist’s instructions in the short term and taking the time to properly maintain your implants down the road.
After the Procedure
Immediately following your dental implant procedure, your periodontist will provide you with specific directions for the care of your implants as well as an antiseptic mouth rinse. It’s important that you follow these directions exactly and don’t rush the healing process. Avoid brushing and flossing the area affected by the implant until it has healed. Instead, gently brush around the affected area to ensure your other teeth remain clean without bothering your new implant. Make sure you follow your periodontist’s directions for food and drink, even if the temporary side effects like swelling or discomfort have gone away. You want to ensure that the implant is actually successful, so don’t sabotage yourself by being lazy.

Long-term Care
Once your implant has fully healed, you can return to your regular oral hygiene routine including a regular checkup and hygiene visit where the implant is cleaned and evaluated as well as your teeth and gums. Careful periodontal probing or a radiograph can reveal early complications to the health of your implant. You may need more frequent cleanings depending on your situation and the cause of your initial tooth loss. You can also return to your regular daily brushing and flossing, paying careful attention to your implant and ensuring that you keep the area around and between the implant clean. Keeping the area free of plaque buildup can help you avoid complications later on.

It’s important that you care for your other natural teeth properly in order to avoid further cavities or periodontal disease which can compromise the health of your implant. Brush and floss as you normally would, ensuring that you do so gently with a soft bristled toothbrush and implant specific floss. Depending on your periodontist’s recommendation, you should also use a low abrasive toothpaste which is free of stain removers that can scratch your implant.

Dental implants are typically the best option for replacing missing teeth as they allow you to keep more of your natural teeth and avoid the bone loss that accompanies missing teeth. However, your after-care will greatly impact the success of the procedure, as will the expertise of the periodontist you choose. Dr. Raymond Kenzik’s periodontal office in Ormond Beach, FL utilizes the most advanced dental treatment technology to provide you with the level of care you deserve.
