Benefits of Laser Therapy for Gum Disease

Gum disease is one of the most prevalent oral health issues that individuals will face. Fortunately, it can usually be easy to treat if caught in the early stages. If it progresses to the later stages more intense treatments may be necessary, which may include laser periodontal treatment. This popular alternative to traditional gum surgery is much less invasive and usually highly successful.
What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, exists in three progressing stages. It starts simply enough with a buildup of plaque along your gumline which will slowly lead to recession and infection. This infection can progress to the point of severe gum recession, bone loss, and even tooth loss if left untreated as the bacteria continue to thrive along and under your gumline.

As gum disease advances from gingivitis, to periodontitis, to advanced periodontitis, it gradually becomes more difficult to treat. This is why it’s important to catch it early on and practice preventative measures to maintain your oral health, like a regular oral health routine. It’s also important to get regular checkups with your periodontist, especially if you have a history of gum disease.

What are Your Treatment Options?
There are several options available for treatment of gum disease, depending on how far it has progressed. In the first stages it can be as simple as an intensive deep cleaning from your periodontist, but if it has progressed further you may need either traditional or laser periodontal therapy to stop the progression and begin the healing process.

Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) is the only FDA approved treatment that is shown to result in new growth and reattachment of bone and gum tissue. By using a laser this treatment is able to remove bacteria and infected gum tissue while leaving healthy tissue unharmed. This means less pain and less downtime following the procedure as compared to more traditional procedures. While the LANAP protocol may not be right for everyone, it’s certainly worth considering. You should always pursue the least invasive measures when possible, and a qualified periodontist won’t push you towards unnecessary procedures.

By consulting an experienced periodontist, you can trust that they will create an individualized treatment plan that is right for your unique situation.
